Instagram finally comes to Android phones after two years on iOS

(Photo by Jon Erwin, hand by Kevin Hall)For those living under a rock, Instagram is a 30 million-strong photo-sharing app that lets users apply a variety of filters and frames to their photos to give them a lomo or "vintage" touch. Photos can then be shared to various social networks including Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.

The long wait is officially over. iPhone owners can no longer gloat about Instagramming their delicious meals while Android users sit staring jealously. Shown briefly at last month's SXSW, the Android version of Instagram is now officially on the Google Play store.
Launched in 2010, Instagram has been exclusive to the iPhone (and camera-enabled iPads) because Instagram's CEO Kevin Systrom wanted it to be perfect. Systrom was quoted as saying Instagram for Android is "one of the most amazing Android apps you'll ever see."
According to Instagam's release note FAQ, the Android app should be virtually identical to the iPhone experience with the exception that Tilt Shift/Blur, Share from Feed, Live Preview and Share to Flickr are absent (for now).
If you've been waiting for Instagram to come to Android, you can go download it in the Google Play store. You will need a smartphone (it's not available for Android tablets yet) that is running Android 2.2 and has Open GL ES 2.
